HSKC Response
to Recent Target 8 Investigation Story:
The Humane Society of Kent County was
mentioned in a recent Target 8 Investigation story regarding
an abuse of power by an employee of a local retirement
community which resulted in the unfortunate euthanasia of a
dog named Buddy.
This retirement community employee came
to the Humane Society and falsely claimed authority to
request euthanasia for Buddy, a dog owned by a resident of
the community. The Humane Society of Kent County followed
its intake procedures, which included obtaining a signed
contract requesting euthanasia as well as a written
certification that the individual who brought in Buddy had
legal rights to the animal. Because the employee falsely
certified to us that she owned Buddy and requested that we
euthanize the animal, the animal was humanely euthanized.
We are horrified that this individual
falsely claimed authority to request Buddy’s euthanasia. We
are grateful for Mrs. Helm’s donation to the Humane Society
and it will be used to help the abandoned, relinquished and
injured animals here at the shelter as well as to educate
the public regarding the humane care and treatment of
animals. All of us here at the Humane Society share in her
family’s anger and hurt over this situation.
If you have questions or concerns about
the Humane Society, its policies or procedures, please

and Events Manager, at (616) 453-8900, extension 204.
